Makin’ Hay in the New Year!

Posted on January 15, 2009

Hello again!  Sorry for such a delay between blogs.  The holidays were, well, the holidays, and then I’ve been a bit busy.  What’s up with saying Happy New Year, by the way?  I think you can say Happy New Year through January, but February’s pushing it.  Or you can say it as long as that Verizon commercial is running where the guy unplugs and re-plugs his Christmas lights in.  I hope you had a great holiday.  Highlights for me were definitely Graceland on Christmas Eve and then Paula Deen’s buffet at a Harrah’s casino in Tunica.

I’m back at the gym pretty regularly to shed some southern butter and white gravy.  I don’t mind at all.

My Monster.com spot is airing!  Quite a bit, too.  It’s been seen on ABC (during the bachelor), FX, VH1, E! (during the Golden Globe red carpet ceremony).  The whole campaign is generating quite a bit of buzz.  I’m even on the N.Y. Times website!  You can also see it here on Youtube. But I’ll have it up here on the ‘ol website as soon as I can.

Auditions have been pretty good.  I had an audition for Kingsford charcoal last week.  It went pretty well, but I think I would have heard by now about a callback.  Voice Over is GREAT!  I’ve had some great reads for commercials, video games, and cartoons.  I had one for Disney yesterday that I think I nailed, but VO is VO.  You just gotta enjoy going in and auditioning, and hope for the best.  Just reading is fun anyway.  Coming up with different voices, screaming your head off, etc.  Very cathartic.

I got a part in a play!  Now this is VERY exciting.  It’s a musical adaptation of a Moliere play George Dandin.  It’s called Makin’ Hay.  Which is pretty hilarious when you consider I’ve made quite a bit of hay since my youth on Papaw Charlie’s dairy farm.  Which sucks.  Truly.  Makin’ hay, not Makin’ Hay.  Good money for a youngster in the summer, and I guess it teaches you work ethics or whatever, but it sucks eggs, man.  I wouldn’t recommend it.

Rehearsals started last night.  The cast is pretty hilarious.  The show itself is too.  It’s just fun.  Totally over the top characters singing these country ballads of love to one another.  I sang “Lovesick Blues” by Hank Williams for the audition.  Not really a think piece.  But I’m thrilled.  So glad to be back treading the boards.  Speaking of songs, have you ever heard the song, “I Was Meant for the Stage” by the Decemberists?  Makes me cry every time.  I want it played at my funeral.  Little nervous about the whole musical aspect of the play, though.  I was in school choir and sang at church til my voice changed.  I’m more of a “sing while you lather” kinda guy, if you know what I mean.  But with the amount of rehearsal…I’ll be singing in my sleep.

It’s Equity Waiver which doesn’t pay.  Theater never really does pay unless you’re touring a Broadway show.  But it will be VERY good for my soul.  Which is priceless.  I’ll post more as we continue rehearsals (Every night and weekend until the end of February).  The show opens February 27th and runs through April 5th.  We play on the weekends at the Actor’s Co-Op.  If you’re in L.A., I’d love it if you’d come!

Great to be back.  And thanks again so much for reading this.  It makes things so much fuller knowing that we’re kinda going through this together.  Happy New Year!!!
